Mike passed away peacefully in his sleep with his wife and daughter by his side on July 29, he was 74. He was born in Southern California and lived all over the United States while his father was in the Navy. The family settled in Aptos after his father's retirement.
He started running in 1978 simply to get in shape and lose some weight. He found running gave him a way to relax and enjoy nature and lead him to many lasting friendships. During his running career he completed close to one hundred races ranging in distance from five kilometers to 100 miles and twice completed the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run. His favorite distance was 50 miles.
After retirement from Safeway, Mike and his wife traveled to Europe, Asia, South America and Africa. Tanzania became his favorite place to vacation. In 2014 they took their daughter there and marveled at how she also fell in love with the country and its people. It was by far their most memorable trip.
Mike is survived by his wife of 50 years, Susan and his daughter Stacy. He was preceded in death in 1997 by his youngest daughter Michele. He will be remembered for his love of people and nature.
No services will be held. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made in memory of his daughter Michele Bruder to Oregon Health Sciences University Foundation (OHSU) for Melanoma Research, https://www.onwardohsu.org/donation.
