Reginald Joseph Howard passed peacefully on January 22, 2018, just shy of his 87th birthday. He is survived by his wife of sixty years Marie Antoinette Torrigino Howard, his loyal canine companion Carli, his brother-in-law Arnold Torrigino, his eight children Tom, Peter, Andrew, Regina, Matthew, Margaret, John and Grace, twenty-three grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and other family who were touched by his loving presence.
Reginald was born February 7, 1931 to Reginald Adams Howard and Margaret Catherine Cummins Howard in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. An only child, Reginald learned the importance of family from his mother who moved the family around the United States, finally settling on Benvenue Avenue in Berkeley, California. Here, he met the love of his life, with whom he would eventually raise his loving family.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in February of 1951 and was assigned to U.S.S. Twining (DD 540). After five trips to the Korean Peninsula under enemy fire, he was honorably discharged as a 2nd class petty officer in January of 1955.
After his service, Reginald went back to school, graduating from San José State University. In 1961, he and his wife opened a family business, Howard's Shoes for Children. It is still owned and operated by the Howard Family.
A very spiritual man, Reginald showed his family and friends his love for God through his actions. He dedicated many of his later years to servicing the poor and downtrodden, weekly volunteering for the Catholic Diocese's jail ministry.
Family and friends will celebrate his life and memory through holy mass at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Capitola on Monday, January 29, at 11 am. A Rosary Prayer Service will also be held prior to mass at 10:30 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to St. Vincent de Paul at St. Joseph's Catholic Church (435 Monterey Ave., Capitola CA, 95010).
