Obituary of James Balassi

Jim, 83, suffering from Parkinson's Alzheimer's passed away with his wife, Stanna at his side at Aegis of Aptos on Father's Day.

Jim was born in Modesto, California to Silvio and Valentina and at an early age, he was driving the tractor and milking the cows on their 40 acres of farmland. He graduated from Modesto Jr. College. After moving to Santa Cruz, he earned his teaching credential at San Jose State University and was a member of PIKA Fraternity.

After graduation, he was drafted into the Army and spent six weeks in basic training in Monterey and Washington, returning to Marry Stanna in Los Gatos at St. Mary's Church. They moved to San Antonio Texas, where he was stationed for two years at Fort Sam Houston where their first daughter, Shelly was born.

After returning to San Jose, they settled in Willow Glen where they raised their five children, Shelly (Steve), Karen, Brian, Linda and Bradley. Jim went into the independent service station business with his father-in-law, Ted Halstead and operated four stations in San Jose and one in Watsonville. In 1982, they moved to Aptos and retired, closing their Watsonville Station in 1985.

Last year, Jim and Stanna celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with their children, grandchildren, Shane (Kami), Brooke (Richard), Clay (Rebecca), Cory and Dani, and great-grandchildren Luke and Allison.

Jim was proud of his 36 years of sobriety, "One Day at a Time" and he and Stanna had many loving friends in AA.

A celebration of life will be held at Twin Lakes Church in Aptos in Munske Hall on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Jim's family requests the donations in memory of Jim be made to Twin Lakes Church, (2701 Cabrillo College Dr. Aptos, CA 95003), or to Heartland Hospice, (824 Bay Avenue Capitola, CA 95010).
