Obituary of Roma Evelyn Gibbs

Roma Evelyn Gibbs passed away October 22, 2010 at her home in Santa Cruz with her loving family by her side. She was 92. Roma was born in Springfield, Ohio one of four children of Charles W. Quigley and Vina Whedbee Quigley. She came to California in the early 1920's and grew up in Perris, California where she attended Perris Elementary and Perris Union High School. In 1938 she married Franklin Gibbs and moved to Los Angeles where she started her family. She later moved to Santa Cruz in 1953. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 460. Roma was described by her family as a devoted wife, mother and a loving grandmother. She enjoyed camping trips to the mountains and gatherings with her family and friends. She had a talent for cake decorating and soon became known for making beautiful wedding cakes through out the Santa Cruz area until arthritis caused her to stop. In 1999 her dream of going to Hawaii finally came true. She is survived by her daughters, Elaine Manchester and her husband Royce of Santa Cruz, Shirley Gagne and her husband Mike of Santa Cruz and Donna Eason and her husband Lloyd of Phoenix, AZ; and her son, Douglas Gibbs of Santa Cruz. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren, two great grandchildren and her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Gibbs, her son, Larry Gibbs, her sister, Leota McAtee and her two brothers, Bill Quigley and Art Quigley. A celebration of Roma's life will be held at Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St, Santa Cruz, CA. on Saturday November 13, 2010 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers contributions are preferred in Roma's memory to Hospice of Santa Cruz, 940 Disc Dr., Scotts Valley, CA. 95066.
