Obituary of Richard Ernest McCarroll

Richard E. McCarroll Richard E. McCarroll passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on April 27, 2010. He was born May 14, 1923 in Oklahoma. He moved to Sacramento as an infant. He spent many happy years at Sacramento Children's Home after the death of his mother at the age of ten. His father would visit every weekend and after the depression he was able to provide a home for him. He graduated McClatchy High School in 1941. Richard joined the Navy in 1942. He served four years in the South Pacific during WWII on the U.S.S. Adair. He was engaged in two major battles Okinawa and the Philippine Islands. In 1946 he then moved to Santa Cruz where he married and raised his family. He was in the Title business for 35 years. Richard met the love of his life in 1973, Bette Lee. They enjoyed traveling the world, entertaining, dancing and spending time with the family. Richard was a life member of the Santa Cruz Elks Club. He was also a life member of the Santa Cruz Host Lions Club serving 56 years. In the Lions he fulfilled every position and was on many committees. Amongst his many positions he was the secretary for 20 years. Many of the member became his lifelong friends. He was very proud to be a Lion. Richard was an avid golfer and enjoyed his weekly games with his Lion buddies. He enjoyed gardening, cooking, and was and avid sports fan. He was aa very admirable man and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He leaves behind his wife of 37 years Bette Lee McCarroll; brothers Bob (Jackie) McCarroll and Jack (Dena) McCarroll; brother in law, John Abbie Perez; daughters, Judy (Larry) Simon, Sheri (Lloyd) Jennings, son, Richard Soria; grandchildren, Tiffany McCarroll, Jill (David) Bucaloy, Scott (Melissa) Jennings, Rylan Soria, Shana Soria, Lanie Davidson, Jaime Acosta, Tim Small, niece Gail (Jack) Donavan and 8 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Opal McCarroll, his son Ted McCarroll and his sister Betty Martinez. Services will be held at Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St, Santa Cruz, CA on Friday April 30, 2010 beginning at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Paul Sweet Rd, Santa Cruz, CA The family would like to thank Hospice of Santa Cruz County, and his caretakers, Stacey Schatz, Rosanna Prucha and Marty Vargas, for their tender loving care and support. In lieu of flowers the family prefers donations to the Santa Cruz Host Lions Club or Hospice of Santa Cruz County.
