Obituary of Maria Socorro Flores

March 25, 1971 – September 23, 2017

Lifelong Santa Cruz Resident

A recitation of the Holy Rosary and a Mass of Catholic Burial will be held on Thursday (9/28) and Friday (9/29) in Santa Cruz for Maria Socorro Flores who passed away peacefully at her home with her loving family at her bedside. She was 46 years old. Socorro, as she affectionately was known to all, came to Santa Cruz at the age of one with her family. She attended Mountain School in Soquel, Branciforte Middle School and graduated from Santa Cruz High School. Her birthplace of Apulco, Jalisco, Mexico was a favorite destination of Socorro's. Her many trips there usually included the annual fiesta of Apulco which honors the Virgen del Refugio as well as the yearly birthday celebration of her now 96-year-old grandmother, and her late grandparents in Cuidad Guzman.

Socorro was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, dedicated friend, and a hard worker. She first started working in her mother's house cleaning business and was a familiar face behind the counter at McDonald's on 41st Avenue, and leaves many customers, and colleagues who were her longtime friends during her 15 plus year career.

Her favorite things in life were photography, writing and her family; playfully combining the three in the many social media postings where her photographs and recent happenings of her loving family were displayed. She loved attending family functions that included music and dancing.

She is survived by her mother and father, Maria and Aristeo Flores of Santa Cruz; her five brothers; Enrique, Jose Maria and sister in law Alicia, Miguel and sister in law Salina, Carlos and sister in law Sarah and brother Danny. She is survived by 6 nieces and 4 nephews as well as many uncles, aunts and cousins spread throughout Santa Cruz, Southern California and Jalisco Mexico that cared for her deeply.

Family and friends may pay their respects at a visitation on Thursday, September 28, 2017 from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel. The rosary will begin at the chapel at 6 p.m. The mass will be celebrated on Friday September 29th at 11 a.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church (515 Frederick Street in Santa Cruz) Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery on 7th Avenue.
