Jean Brewster

Obituary of Jean C. Brewster

A recitation of the Holy Rosary and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Scotts Valley for Jean Brewster who passed away peacefully in Sunnyvale, Ca on November 22, with her family by her side. Jean's life was blessed with longevity and love. She was very happy to have celebrated her 90th birthday this past June at Severino's with many of her dear friends and family attending. Jean was born in Middleboro, Massachusetts to Margaret Lawson and J. Adrian Bissonnette. She attended both Stephen's and Hofstra Colleges, where she was introduced to and would later marry Larry Whalen. They drove across country to California with infant Meg and her parents in 1952 and settled in Los Altos, where they would have their remaining four children and live for the next 24 years. Jean and Larry left Los Altos in 1976 and moved to Santa Cruz. After Larry's passing in 1983, Jean began a career at Seagate Technology in Scotts Valley as a receptionist. She was affectionately known as the "Silver Fox" for her professionally polished style and classic looks. A few years later Jean would meet and then marry Robert "Bob" Brewster. They were a part of a very close knit dance community and were the original groupies for Wally's Swing World. They followed the band since it's inception and cherished many wonderful nights of dancing to their music with their friends at various locations. Jean was a long-time member of the Red Hat Society and a parishioner of San Agustin Catholic Church in Scotts Valley. There wasn't a more positive person on this earth, who loved and lived life to it's fullest. Any friend of Jean's was a friend for life. Her friends were of all ages and walks of life. Her love for all was unconditional. She is survived by her daughter Meg Whalen (Meder), her sons and daughters in law Lawrence Whalen and Cali James; Robert and Sarah Whalen; her daughter Julie and Ed Bogner; her son John Whalen; her step-son Robert and Jeanina Brewster. Jean also leaves her beloved grandchildren Lindsey Bogner (John Weyer), Matthew Bogner, Alyssa Whalen, Scott Meder, Hannah Whalen, Blake Bogner, Jonathon Whalen, James Whalen and Jennifer Brewster; her two great grand children Johnny and Vivienne Weyer, and her loving nephew Christopher and Nan Murphy. She also leaves behind her extended Whalen family on the East Coast. Jean was preceded in death by her 2 husbands, Larry Whalen in 1983 and Robert Brewster in 2013, and her only sister Lauretta in 2015. Friends may pay their respect at a viewing to be held at Benito and Azzaro Pacific Garden Chapel on the 15th of December from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The rosary will follow visitation at the chapel starting at 6:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be the following day on the 16th at 10:00 a.m. at San Agustin Catholic Church (257 Glenwood Dr.) in Scotts Valley. Private burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery in Los Altos.
