Obituary of Doris Sylvia Monte

Family and friends will gather in Aptos on Thursday and Friday to say farewell to a loving mother, grandmother, and devoted friend, Doris Monte who passed away in Aptos on August 3.  Born in San Francisco she remained a true San Franciscan at heart throughout her entire life.  She graduated from Washington High School where she met the love of her life, Rudolph Daniel Monte.  They waited until Rudy returned from his service to our country during World War II, to get married and spend the next 67 years together.

Rudy and Doris opened up two grocery stores together; the first being Lady Fair Market in San Jose,  named for Doris and her blond hair. She worked at that store for over 20 years doing the books, checking, and stocking groceries.  The store of their dreams, Deluxe Foods of Aptos, was opened in 1977.  Once again, Doris was the head checker and worked in the office until she and Rudy retired.

Doris enjoyed her retirement, doing the things she loved which included going out to lunch and to the movies, shopping, playing cards, reading, and dancing with Rudy into the late hours of the night.  She volunteered her time as a Pink Lady with the Dominican Hospital Auxiliary, and as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Capitola for more than 20 years. Doris was a devout Catholic, and serving the Lord continually brought her joy.

She was a dedicated wife and mother, and a good friend to so many in the community. Doris touched many people in her lifetime, and will be remembered in their hearts forever. An incredibly special woman with a great zeal for life, she was full of love and kindness for those around her; nourishing people with her positive outlook on all things.

Doris is survived by her four children: Rudy Monty Jr. and his wife Deena of Waterford, Linda Parriott and her husband Bob of Twain Harte, Paul Monte and his wife, Charlotte of San Jose, and Marcus Monte of La Selva Beach.  She also leaves her five loving grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A vigil ceremony will be held on Thursday evening August 16, 2018 at Resurrection Catholic Church (7600 Soquel Drive) Aptos, beginning at 6 p.m.  Friends may pay their respects at the church that afternoon from 4 p.m. until the vigil begins.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 17 at the church. This year’s Monte Foundation Fireworks in Capitola on October 7th are being dedicated to her life.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the event, as the proceeds will be used to help build the new library in Capitola.
