Obituary of Lionel Martin

Lionel Martin, age 85 years, of Scotts Valley, passed away peacefully in his sleep with his wife of 60 years, Jane Martin, by his side. Lionel was a happy and upbeat person, who enjoyed technology, travelling and spending time with his wife and family.

Lionel was born on June 2, 1933 in Portsmouth, England. He grew up in Northfield, England, a suburb of Birmingham, during WWII, where he met Jane in 1941 in primary school.

Lionel attended the University of London and graduated with an honors degree in mechanical engineering, followed by serving for two years in the Royal Air Force. Lionel and Jane married in Northfield, England on July 9, 1958.

Lionel and Jane moved to the United States in 1966 with their four young children when Lionel was a systems analyst working for IBM. In 1970, they settled in San Jose, CA where Lionel held various positions for many technology startups, some of which went public, including serving as Vice President of Marketing for Wyse Technology. In 1978, Lionel and Jane moved to Scotts Valley, CA. Lionel retired in 2009 from Cisco Systems in the technology publications group.

Lionel is survived by his wife Jane, and his four children Simon Martin, Sarah Wright, Katharine Martin and Caroline Greene. He is also survived by nine grandchildren (Trevor and Elizabeth Martin; Haley Whiston, Taylor Wright and Emily Seifert; Emma and Kit Laurits; and Jason and Jeremy Greene) and five great grandchildren (Cassidy and Wyatt Whiston; Jordan and Madison Wright; and Teddy Wright). Lionel was predeceased by his brother Barry Martin and his great granddaughter Chloe Seifert.

A Memorial Service will be held for Lionel at the Calvary Episcopal Church, 532 Center Street, Santa Cruz on Thursday December 20, 2018 at 1 pm. Contributions in memory of Lionel may be made to the Hospice of Santa Cruz County. Arrangements are under the direction of Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel, Santa Cruz, CA.
