Obituary of Richard A. Allen

Richard Allen passed away on Dec. 11th at the age of 97. He was born in Riverside, Rhode Island to Sharlotte and Roy Allen. He was one of three children. He grew up in Rhode Island. He enjoyed scouting and playing the clarinet.

He went to college at Rhode Island University and entered the

Naval Aviation Cadet Program after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He went for flight training and became a navy pilot. He was assigned to the Fanshaw Bay carrier which was deployed to the South Pacific. Their assignment was to help retake the Philippines. Their carrier was attacked the evening of June 17, 1944 off Saipan. This was the "Battle of Leyte".

He survived the battle and was awarded the Courageous Flying Cross Award for his bravery and service. He remained in the Navel Reserves after his release from active duty.

He returned and married his sweetheart Virginia McAfee and settled in the Bay Area. He finished his college education at UC Berkeley and graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering. They had one son, Richard S. Allen. He went to work for Westinghouse in Sunnyvale for the next 37 years. His wife Virginia, (Sally) died in 1978. He married two more times, first to Frances Sniffen and Janette Meylink, both who also passed away. He moved to Aptos and met his beautiful partner, Evelyn Byrne. He was active member of his church and SIRS. For many years he volunteered for the Scout tax preparation project. He was trained and prepared taxes for seniors. He was active with the MOA (military officers association) and helped set out flags at the cemetery on each Memorial Day. He resided in Aptos until his death.

He was preceded in death by his son, Rick. He is survived by his sister, Joan Knight, two grandchildren, Carey Patrick and Kevin Allen and his daughter-in-law, Ann Allen. He has four great grandchildren, Gabriel Allen, Sadie Patrick, Kayla Patrick and Jackson Gotz and a loving partner Evelyn Byrne. Dick was a kind, loving, family man and patriot. He will be missed. A memorial service will be held at the Aptos Community United Methodist Church on January, 26th at 1:00. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the MOA scholarship fund.
