Obituary of Kathleen Una Reedy

A private committal has been arranged for Kathy Reedy who passed away peacefully at the Maple House II in Santa Cruz on February 2, 2019, with her loving family at her bedside.  Born in San Jose, California to Edith and Everett Lorence, Kathy was 90 years old.

Kathy graduated in 1951 from Santa Clara County Hospital School of Nursing and became a registered nurse.  She met her future husband, Bill Reedy, a Navy man, at a USO dance in San Jose.  While Bill was stationed in Hawaii, Kathy practiced her nursing at the clinic on a pineapple plantation.  They married in Kahuku, Hawaii in 1952 and happily returned to visit for their 25th wedding anniversary.

Kathy and Bill came to Santa Cruz in 1953 when Bill was hired by the Santa Cruz Fire Department.  She worked as a nurse for Doctors Cowden, Boldrick, Morris and Hilberman for many years.

Mom loved to dance and could jitterbug with the best of them.  She was a wonderful hostess and passed her love of entertaining on to her family.  She was always the one to turn to for sage, loving advice not only for her own children but their friends and loved ones as well.

Her love of a good romance novel and the challenge of on-line poker kept her busy.

Kathy and Bill loved to pack up their trailer and boat and travel to their favorite fishing lakes.  She especially loved Topaz Lake where Bill could fish and she could gamble in the lodge.  Lake Siskiyou at the base of Mount Shasta was another destination for annual family camping trips.  Family knew that when mom and dad took off, the road home would inevitably lead through Reno.

Kathy is survived by her son and daughter in-law, Mike and Janet Reedy of Watsonville; her daughters and sons in-law, Patty and Ken Sapone and Colleen and Dave Iermini all of Santa Cruz.  Kathy also leaves her three beloved grandchildren, Jessica Reedy, Brian Reedy and Will Iermini.  Her cherished family includes sister Marilyn Jacopi, cousins Joyce and Syd Raineri, brother in-law Bob Reedy, sister in-law Bonnie Eastin and her husband Rick.  "Aunt" Kathy has many nieces and nephews whom she treasured.  She was preceded in death by her husband Bill, sister Bernice Lorence, nephews Mark Alsip and Gary Reedy, sister in-law Donna Reedy and brothers in-law Jim Reedy, Dave Alsip and Bill Jacopi.

Kathy spent the last six years living at Maple House II under the loving care of owner Sara Chen and manager Ronald Lissing as well as all of the wonderful Maple House staff.  The family would like to sincerely thank them for the comfort they provided Kathy each and every day.

Family would like to thank Hospice of Santa Cruz County for helping mom through the last few months. Please make any kind acts of charity in Kathy's name to Hospice of Santa Cruz County (940 Disc Dr. Scotts Valley, CA. 95066)

The family is planning a celebration of Kathy’s life in the next several weeks.
