I was thinking of Joyce - Mrs Brodsky back in the early 70s -and thought I'd Google her hoping to find her well as a former adored UConn professor 20 yrs my senior. So sorry for your loss but what a great life lived and I'm quite sure her voice and spirit will continue to fill the room. Shara I passed you every morning on Gurleyville Rd waiting for the bus. Great memories and nostalgia for those days.

My name is Michael Weinstein, and I live in Pittsburgh. I am doing extensive genealogy research and only recently discovered that Joyce was a distant cousin of mine. In the past few years, I had heard many wonderful things about Joyce from other cousins in the extended family of Abba and Jenny Goldman, who were closely related to my great grandparents. I had hoped some day to meet Joyce to speak with her about her father, who had some type of business relationship with my father in the deli business in NYC decades ago. I hope the memorial to her in early August is a special tribute to her. I wish I could attend. Thank you.

My deepest condolences to the family. I was lucky enough to work with Joyce on her book on Yun Gee and Li-lan. She was always so full of life and passion for art and her work. She also commissioned me to create her magicalized portrait where I go to know her a little bit more and realized we had many of the same interests and beliefs. That was quite an honor to create that for her. Much love to all.

what a great loss in the passing of joyce brodsky. we became friends in our gym class and it has been so hollow without her huge presence. i regret that we did not make it to our planned 'dinner and drinks' which she had toi cancel due to fatigue after her surgery.
she is greatly missed and i am so saddened by the loss of such a special person and friend in my life.
my deep condolences to her family, daughter, grandson and son in law as well as her brother, all of whom she mentioned so often with great fondness.

Joyce was my colleague, mentor and friend for many years at the University of Connecticut. I have so many memories of her spirit, spunk, smartness and support. She lived life to the fullest and would expect nothing less than that- . The brushstroke of her life has touched us all, and will be missed, and I count myself as one.

Joyce was a wonderful person, a critical thinker, an engaged feminist and a terrific visionary in the arts. She created opportunities for so many artists, art historians and others through her institution building and her sincere, caring outreach. Joyce was passionate about the arts, and the ways they inspire, enlighten and transform us. Thanks so much, Joyce, for being in our lives at UCSC, and for a long career of commitment and dedication to a progressive vision of a better world.
Fondly, Jennifer

You are missed but your influence is still strong. Thank you for giving me my one and only academic job and then doing the mentoring that kept me in place. A feminist through and through. We don't make them like you anymore! Thanks Joyce.

I met Joyce seven years ago at our exercise class. We quickly bonded due to the same last name and Brooklyn heritage.
Joyce was a classy lady with great sense of humor and East Coast quick wit, a great conversationalist who knew so much about so much and especially knew her own mind.
Her presence will be greatly missed.

Joyce changed my life when she hired me as a young artist barely out of graduate school at UConn in 1984, she is such an integral part of our legacy here. She created a sense of community for young faculty in our small university town but was always driving us to New York as she was so in touch with everything that was going on in the galleries, museums, not to mention the best boutiques! My memorable first trip to Europe in 1987, (Poland, Vienna and Venice in January!) was with Joyce and I was so impressed with her travel savvy, which was a strong influence on my own far flung travels later. We came to know her mother Ruth who when visiting from Florida enjoyed having gin-and-tonics on Joyce's screened in back porch, never was there a more lovely place to be, and we also met Steven. Shara had moved west by that time but we always knew what she was up to from her proud mother. In the last decade when several friends moved west, I began to regularly visit her in Santa Cruz and know more about her post-UConn life and friends here, she was blessed in having two rich academic lives. I will always hear Joyces sage advice in my ears as she has provided all of these years, and would have in a few days time this year also, but alas, I missed that one last visit.
