I met Penny in1980 when she came on-shift to take over my 2 patients in the ICU. In minutes I knew that she was a very bright nurse and a very caring person. Within 2 weeks together we were exploring ethnic restaurants, bargain shopping and visiting bookstores. In 1983 she asked Mike and me to move into the Laurent street house with her. After our neighbor and landlady, Ginger Bosso's approval we began 9 wonderful years living together. There were trips together to Hong Kong, London and Calistoga. There were meals and fun, visits with Jim and Jeff for the weekend, weddings in the garden and memorials for colleagues who died. All played out with Penny planning and leading the way.
In 1992 Mike and I relocated to San Francisco to care for a very dear friend dying of AIDS. On our last trip down the driveway Penny stated that she had lived with us longer than previous men but this time we all were parting as friends.
In these days of Covid precautions when there will be no gathering to share stories and hugs. Consider yourself hugged by the best: Penny. She knew how to embrace you with love.
Finally, though she was barely 5 feet tall, she was giant in spirit and never shy. She did, however, not like to call her various cats to dinner with a "here kitty, kitty." Rather she named her cats so she could stand at the door and sing "Hello Dolly" or the last cat we knew on Laurent street Gracie. So stand up, square your shoulders and belt out "Amazing Grace" to Penelope Barbara Day.
Rest in Peace my friend. I am proud to have walked on earth beside you.
