Ben was a TRUE southern gentleman. We remember fondly all our times with Ben and Mary Ellen at church affairs and our wonderful trip to New Zealand/Australia. Doug also enjoyed his company at Sirs. He will be sadly missed.

I worked with Ben at the Santa Cruz Social Security office for many years. He was the kindest, most patient and gentle man I have ever known. I feel lucky to have known and worked with him. Our thoughts are with you at this most difficult of times.

This is a poignant time for all the Irons Family. How nourishing for each of you to know that Ben was lovingly cared for at home and that you were always there for him. Your loss is great, but your memories must be bountiful.

Wow, if my Dad is still alive, he'll be one year older than the very humble and gentleman Ben whom I first met at the Museum of Natural History in Santa Cruz. Ben always stand a step back behind Mary Ellen and listening in on our conversations and he startled me when he suddenly bursted out loud that saying that he had never met an Asian woman whom had got to school in Hong Kong when he heard that I told Mary Ellen that I went to St.Rose of Lima's Girls school before immigration to the U.S. ,that was back in the 1980's ! The next time I came across Ben was at Lillian McPherson Rouse Memorial Service and again a step behind Mary Ellen. Then the Soquel Pioneer Potluck Pinic Lunch in July of 2010, one of the Local History Buff stuff...Have no idea he was a Major in the service during WWII and survived the real POW camp in Germany which was ten thousand times worse than the detension camp on the Japanese Americans in the U.S. ! My salute to a true WW II Hero. He will probably continue to do research on the Chinese with Lillian, his mother-in-law in Heaven! My condolence to the Irons family whom I have never met. Have another memorial to go to at 3pm...so....till we meet again!

I also worked with Ben at the Santa Cruz Social Security office. His bio says he was a gentleman. He was in both meanings of the word. I saw him occasionally later, usually it seemed emerging from the downtown post office. He was as friendly then as before. A generous soul.

Wanted to comment on what a striking likeness Ben's picture on the back of the memorial program is to Ted. The celebration of Ben's life was today was a great tribute to him and a great tribute to all of you: Maryellen, Ben Jr., Yvette Ted, Martha and John and Ben's fantastic grandchildren. You all are a great family to be related to. Lots of love,
Morgan, Jeff, Makai & Kala'e
