Obituary of Evelyn Catherine Nichols

Evelyn Catherine Nichols was called home to be with her Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, January 19th, 2011, at the age of 98. She was born on October 14th, 1912, in Norfolk, Virginia, to Robert Newton of Stogumber, England and Mary Flemming Newton of Unadilla, New York. "Evie" spent her youth in Virginia before the family moved to Southern California in the 1920's. In 1933, Evie married her true love, Douglas W. Nichols in Santa Cruz, California. They remained happily married for 48 years until Doug's death in 1981. Evie and Doug had one child, Marilyn, who preceded Evie in death in 1969. Evie and her family lived at Mt. Hermon Christian Conference Center for almost 40 years. She was known for her enthusiastic love for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Her life revolved around gospel ministry and evangelizing everyone she met. Her public ministry began with frequent guest solo's on Christian Radio, which eventually lead to the "Aunt Evie and Uncle Bill" show, from Burlingame Baptist Church in the 1940's and a local weekly television series called "Happiness Is" from 1970 to 1971. Most recently, Evie could be heard on her radio program, "Heart to Heart with Grandma Evie," sharing the gospel with children and recounting exciting missionary stories. Evie enjoyed teaching students about Jesus at Baymonte Christian School, where she also organized chapels and discipled youth. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Scotts Valley and was the organizer of "Christmas Alive," a live presentation of the gospel story during the Christmas season. She will be greatly missed by all her knew her. Her last words, "I love you," were typical of her life and ministry. She is survived by her two grandchildren, Steve Duncan and Kim Abendroth; four great-grandchildren, Hayley, Luke, Maddie and Gracie Abendroth; brother, Bill Newton and sister, Mary Alter. A memorial service will be held at the Mount Hermon Christian Conference Center Auditorium on Sunday, Feb. 6th at 2:30 pm.
