Obituary of Dorothy Delores Dick

Dorothy Delores Dick March 4, 1925-September 4, 2010 Dorothy Delores Dick (also affectionately known as Dot) slipped from her family's embrace in the early morning hours of September 4, 2010 at Sunshine Villa in Santa Cruz, Ca. where she had been a resident for the last 10 months. Dorothy was born March 4, 1925 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Walter and Frances Miller. At an early age the family moved to Van Nuys, California. After completing high school Dorothy enlisted in the U.S. Army WAC during WWII, and was trained as a medical assistant. She was assigned to Lettermans General Hospital in San Francisco where she met her future husband, Bill. After their discharge they were married in Van Nuys on December 1, 1946. Bill took a position in Cupertino, Ca, and they relocated to Saratoga, Ca. where they raised their 3 daughters. Dorothy was very active in the girls' Girl Scout troops, even actually going camping which she dearly hated! She was also very involved in volunteering at the girl's schools. In 1967 Bill and Dorothy purchased Carmel Valley Poultry Ranch in Carmel, Ca. They spent 25 years providing eggs to most of the hotels and restaurants in the Monterey area. Dorothy ran the "store" from their house 6 days a week, where they sold an array of eggs, vegetables, nuts, and raspberries. Dorothy cherished her years working at the Ranch store because of the many close friendships and acquaintances she developed. After she "retired" from running the store, she began her other career, "volunteering". She was a long time volunteer and President for the Monterey Peninsula Volunteers Service and former President of Carmel Garden Club. She also volunteered 17 years at Carmel Hospital of Monterey Peninsula, and for the Monterey Cancer Society Thrift Store. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, and she and Bill loved to take their weekend trips to Morro Bay and also enjoyed many trips abroad. Dorothy truly enjoyed all of the holidays, from Easter egg hunts in their yard for her grandchildren, to her wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, where the entire family would all always attend. Dorothy is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Bill, her daughters Holly (Daryl) Biancucci, of Scotts Valley, Ca., Melinda (Mike) Boren, of Rogue River, Or. Grandchildren, Kyle, Lauren, Matthew, Jennilee, and Billy. Great grandchildren, Kendal, Rocky and Jax. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother, Donald, and her daughter, Barbara (Bill McWood) (2008). The family would like to thank Hospice of Santa Cruz County, and Sunshine Villa, for their exceptional loving care of our mother, especially in her final weeks. Our mother was always treated with great dignity by the staff of both Hospice and Sunshine, and we will always be grateful to all that took care of her. Our mother always said, "Her greatest gift was her family." We will all miss and treasure our memories of her always. Donations can be made in Dorothy's name to: Hospice of Santa Cruz County, 940 Disc Drive, Scotts Valley, Ca 95066 (831-430-3000). Services will be held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Carmel, Ca. which will be announced at a later date.
