Daniel Untermyer

Obituary of Daniel Untermyer

Daniel Untermyer was born August 8, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois to Joan Gray Untermyer and Samuel Untermyer II, the youngest of their four children. The family moved first to New York, then to California. When Dan was a boy, his father gave him a harmonica, and showed him how to play. Dan earned a bachelor's degree in Communications and proceeded to his calling: music. First known as "Ice Cube Slim" on his radio show, "The Greasy Spoon Cafe" on KUSP radio in Santa Cruz California, Dan launched his music promotion business in order to reach a wider audience and directly work with the artists he admired. He produced music recordings, patronized artists, travelled and booked countless musical performances, and brought joy to music lovers around the world. He was Bon Ton West, from a phrase which inspired him to share his passions and widen exposure to the talents of others: 'Laissez les bons temps rouler.' Dan collected music and memorabilia with a passion, but they were a physical manifestation of his real gift for attracting friends everywhere he went. He loved as freely as he was loved. His generosity was unmatched. Dan never let a birthday pass without gifts, and never returned from travels without souvenirs for all, but his most heartfelt gifts came on innumerable tapes and CDs and in detailed stories. He filled the hearts of all with music. Dan is survived by his siblings; Samuel Untermyer, III, Sylvia Louise Smith and Beatrice Rubenfeld. He is also survived by Sylvia's and Beatrice's children and grandchildren. Daniel's family will be gathering at Daniel's home on March 4, 2018 at 10:00 AM for a short walk to the ocean to scatter Daniel's ashes. Please confirm your attendance via email to beatrice.artwork@gmail.com. Come and join us as we celebrate Daniel's wonderful life. All Dan's friends and family will be invited to a Celebration of Dan's Life in New Orleans in the spring. Details will be forthcoming."
