Eugene Meschi

Obituary of Eugene L. Meschi

Family and friends are mourning the loss of a beloved husband, father, dedicated friend and firefighter, Gene Meschi, who passed away peacefully at Dominican Hospital following a brief illness.

Born at Sister’s Hospital, he spent his first years on the westside of Santa Cruz, then moving to Boulder Creek as a young boy. A true native son of the San Lorenzo Valley, he proudly called Boulder Creek his forever home. Throughout his life, he often recanted boyhood stories of what it was like to fish the plentiful waters of the San Lorenzo River and explore the redwood-laden hillsides.

After graduating from San Lorenzo Valley High School, Gene served his country in the US Navy aboard the frigate USS Rowan. He was a dedicated member of the Boulder Creek Volunteer Fire Department, following in his father Gene’s footsteps, and served as Fire Captain. His multi-decade career at the Lockheed Martin Santa Cruz facility included positions in the fire and maintenance departments. While at this job, Gene also owned and operated a portable sawmill business.

He was a true craftsman in many ways. Gene restored and dedicated an antique firetruck in honor of a fellow fallen firefighter, which is still in operation to this day in Boulder Creek’s annual July 4th parade. Over his lifetime, he restored several other pieces of fire apparatus and 1930s-era hot rods. Each of these vehicles were revitalized to perfection. Another of his masterpieces was the restoration of the historic Harmon home in Boulder Creek, where he harvested, milled, and handcrafted the lumber used throughout. His construction talents also included building a beautiful barn and cabin.

Gene was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and enjoyed his membership in the duck club. He was a familiar face at many classic and hot rod shows with his prized 1932 3-window flathead Ford. Gene also enjoyed volunteering at barbeques for armed service veterans at Laguna Seca race events.

He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Susan Meschi, his son David Meschi (Michelle) and daughter Dyann Meschi Gregg (Ken); Matt Weld (Amelia), Paul Weld, Sarah Weld Muhly (Cody), Todd Phillips (Tiffany), Lori Phillips Whittle (Mike), along with nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by father, Eugene Meschi; Mother, Sue (Parodi) Meschi; and sister, Barbara Tomlin.

Memorial services are pending. To honor Gene, he would love and encourage all to take time with your loved ones and to live life fully.
