Obituary of Iris Kenney

IRIS HUME KENNEY A memorial service will be held in Scotts Valley for lifetime Santa Cruz resident, Iris Kenney, who passed away on March 4, 2011, following a brief illness, at the age of 91. She was born in Santa Cruz, raised on Van Ness Street on the city's westside, and graduated from Santa Cruz High School in 1938. She was a resident of the Prospect Heights neighborhood for more than 30 years. Iris was a career Santa Cruz City Schools system employee, serving at both Gault and Laurel Elementary Schools as office secretary. She also worked seasonally and after retirement at the Seaside Company gift shop at the Boardwalk arcade. She loved to travel and was a talented singer and dancer. Iris loved people and possessed the gift of happiness; she was almost always able to bring cheer to those around her who might be feeling sad, or blue. Her past two years at Oak Tree Villa in Scotts Valley led her to many friendships. She was a very popular dance partner there, and there was never a shortage of people joining Iris at her table in the dining room. Before moving to Oak Tree Villa, she was a well known personality at Sorrento Oaks Mobile Home Park in Santa Cruz. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Kenney, in 1959, and her son, George Kenney, in February of 2010. Friends are invited to celebrate her life on Saturday, March 19, at Oak Tree Villa (100 Lockewood Lane in Scotts Valley) beginning at 2:00 PM. She will be laid to rest in a private ceremony beside her son, George, at Santa Cruz Memorial Park. Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
