Mary Hasty

Obituary of Mary Hughes Hasty

Mary Frances Hasty was born June 11, 1916 in Dinuba, California at the foot of her beloved Sierra Nevada Mountains. She slipped out of her body on October 28th in her little cottage with her loved ones close by. Mary moved from Dinuba to Carmel and graduated from Monterey High School where she met the love of her life, Hap Hasty, who passed away in 1998. They shared 65 years of life together. Hap and Mary moved to Santa Cruz in 1950. They had four children after being married for 10 years. Hap Jr., Allen, Mary Clyde, and Jim. Jim passed away in 2006. Mary and Hap were always present in the lives of all of their children and grandchildren, never missing sport events, plays, school events. They always provided moral support and sometimes a little discipline too! Mary had a special inner light. She was filled with optimism, gratitude, and joy even when life became difficult for her. She was always observing the beauty of the world around her as it constantly changed. The ocean and clouds, the sunlight changing the colors of green in the trees. She would always say "Do you realize how beautiful it is!" Mary loved to eat even when she only weighed 93 lbs. After almost every meal she would remark "this is the best (whatever it was) that I have ever tasted!" Mary passed away at the end of tomato season on the farm. She would always ask if there were any more tomatoes! She often loved to follow her dinner with a big dish of sorbet. Mary had an amazing memory to the end. She could always remember the names of everyone she had met and what they were doing in their lives. She would read two newspapers cover to cover daily. Her sense of humor was boundless and her smile was inspiring. She was a completely selfless person, always thinking of others before herself. Her love for her family was almost unfathomable. She spoke words of encouragement or thanks. She continually told all of us how much she loved us. After we tucked her in at night she would say "I hope you sleep well and sweet dreams." Her last words were "I love peace and beauty." She is survived by her children and their spouses, Hap and Patty Hasty of Chico, Allen and Judy Hasty of Santa Cruz, Mary Willis Goff and Courtney Goff of San Francisco. Also, her beloved grandchildren are Sally Burgess, Cody Hasty, Faith Hasty, Tessa Hasty, Scott and Lindsey Ritter, Julie Jenkins, Kristy Trujillo, Evan Hoppin, Miranda Stark, Zach and Amber Willis, and 5 step-grandchildren whom she loved as her own. She also has 12 great grandchildren. Quite a flock. Sandy Suarez lovingly cared for Mary for over two years. We cannot thank her enough for the kindness and devotion that she showed Mary and us. She has become part of our family. We would also like to thank Dr. Bruce Eisendorf for caring so well for Mary. A memorial will be held on November 13 at Allen and Judy Hasty's farm, 2125 Ocean St Ext, Santa Cruz, 95060, from 1:00 - 4:00pm. Please RSVP via email to: jrose@cruzio.com.
