Obituary of Michael Patrick Lucas

Mike, much loved seventh child of Joseph and Sylvia Lucas, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his brother John and his sisters Annie, Michelle and Cheryl.

Being the baby of a big family, separated by 20 years from his oldest sibling, Mike was unreservedly spoiled and loved by all his big sisters and brothers. He had the most infectious grin and mischievous ways that made loving him a certainty.

Mike was born in Santa Cruz, a place with so many beautiful and exciting outdoor activities that he embraced wholeheartedly. A daredevil, Mike was a natural athlete and was an avid surfer, mountain biker, waterskier and snowboarder.

A few short weeks before Mike’s 29th birthday he suffered a devastating injury which left him a ventilator-dependant quadriplegic. Never one to stay quiet long, Mike faced his future with the same energy and enthusiasm as always. With the loving care he received from his parents, Mike was able to lead a life filled with happiness and love. With them and often with his brother John, he went to 49er games and as a regular he met and made many new friends. Mike was at every birthday party there was in a large family and often gave wheelchair rides to his many little nieces and nephews to their delight. He developed a passion for sprint car racing and could be seen most Friday nights at Watsonville Speedway, his van parked at turn two enjoying the races. He was also a Sunday mass regular at Resurrection Church in Aptos, always up front with his parents. He gained so many new friends over the years during those Sundays.

Mike was not given a promising future at the time of his injury but with the excellent care he received and his tremendous strength of will, he stared that down and was an eager participant in life for twenty-four years. We are so grateful for that. He will be in our hearts forever.

Mike was a loving son, brother, uncle, friend and Godfather. He leaves behind his big sisters, Cheryl Vessey, Michelle Brown and Anne Carlson and his big brothers: Alan Lucas (Trish), David Lucas (Kat) and John Lucas (Laura). He also leaves behind his loving nieces and nephews; Katy, Maggie, Lucas, Jeffrey, Heather, Nils, Alma, Jeorge, Michael, Sam, Zoey, Abby, Micah, Drew, Amie, Krystina and Kit. He is predeceased by both his parents Sylvia and Joseph Lucas.

A grateful thank you to Mike’s nurses, Mes, Eileen and DJ, who lovingly helped care for him while he was still living at home and the nurses and staff at Windsor Garden Rehabilitation in Salinas and Salinas Valley Hospital for their compassionate care of Mike over the last few years. He kept them all on their toes.
