Jim Warner

Obituary of Jim Warner

1946 – 2022

Jim came to Santa Cruz in 1968, received his PhD at UCSC and never left. His muse was a canine mentor, Guggenheim, who slept under his desk and supervised production of a dissertation in chemistry, “Electronic Excitation of Alkali Atoms by Diatonic Molecules,” 1978.  His long career as computer network engineer included work in developing a state-wide education network with University of California campuses and CENIC, the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California, which connects the state to the world for innovation, research collaboration and economic growth.

Jim leaves behind his beloved family, wife Judy Harrison Warner, sons Brian Kelly Mitchell and Brann Mitchell, grandson Trevor, brother, Buddy (Jodi), sister Anne Warner-Reitz (Eric Reitz), and nieces, nephew, great nieces and great nephews

In addition, Jim leaves the UCSC Information Technology group, many colleagues, friends and neighbors, and two canine rescues “The Muttjobs”, Sweet Pea and Pip, who watch for him by the window and wait at the door.
