A write up from Ian Elman on our last game and what a game it was. With love and respect, Jeff Davidson
So, in what some are saying was the one of the worlds best Bocce matches ever du mond and certainly an instant classic,
Grandpas Rollers kept their title in a near 3-hr epic against 2 time champions Deboccery. The win gives GP Rollers claim to their 2nd title in as many years , joining an elite group with Deboccery as only county back to back title winners. No team has 3-peated. To a crowd of 4 people Deboccery started game 1 strong jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead even without their arguably best player sidelined due to Covid protocols. GP Rollers sliced the game 1 lead in half behind a phenomenal showing from Erica (GPs granddaughter). Battling until the end with brilliant play on both sides of the court, game 1 came down to a 10-10 all tie before GPs won the last roll with 2,points giving them a 12-10 win in Game 1. After a strong rebound in game 2 Deboccery scored a victory 12-9 which sent the league championship into a decisive Game 3. In an unprecedented agreement of sportsmanship both teams agreed to play it until the end no matter the score said at 8pm. After a slow Game 3 start Deboccery found themselves in a deep hole down 7-1. But they did not give up and grinded back to 7-4, then 8-5, before dropping into a 10-6 hole as sun set in the dark redwood surrounded court of DeLa Veaga. Under car headlights, lanterns and headlamps Deboccery survived two rolls to pull with striking distance of GPs and to a potential historic comeback and the coveted 12 pt. Finish line. With the score now 11-9 the remaining crowd of 1 (thanks Cheryl!) knew this would probably be the last roll. Ball by Ball each team swapped leads each shot more precise than the last, until there were 3 balls left. Billy (formerly a roll-player) was throwing rocks all night and proceeds to gingerly lay one in 1mm from the Polino to secure a certain victory then the unthinkable happens…. With Deboccery out of balls desperately trying to knock Billy’s floating pair deep in the middle court helplessly off the rail, all he has to do is basically throw his balls past mid court sheepishly out of harms way to secure the back to back title. Billy sends his ball down and it starts rolling right at the polino and his secured victory pair. Gasps from the crowd, audible disappointment from Grandpa. We all couldn’t believe it but he rolled his throwaway right into the stack which knocked his winning point out and in doing so nudged our red ball closer for a temporary 1 pt in favor. He was down to his last ball, there was only one thing for him to do and that was to knock ours out leaving his ball closer for the win. There hasn’t been a mental error in sports history like this since Chris Webber called a last second time out in the ncaa title game when they didn’t have any left!
Billy, undeterred , toed the line and sent one of his buttery throws down the court, silence hushed the crowd (of 1) and all the rollers as they watched it casually rolled right into position , knocking our ball out and the Polino towards another nearby green ball giving the GPs rollers the walk-off win! And their second title in 2 years.
