I was lucky to work for Ranger McMurry at the Alma FFS in 1979 to ‘82. At that time we had 3 engines there and the helicopter and crew. What a zoo. There was always something going wrong (after all, the facility was already old when they drug it up from what is now the bottom of Lexington Reservoir!). Early on, FC Don Sanches taught me something very important; he told me that whenever I got hauled into Ranger M’s office for a “correction”, I should let him vent for several minutes, and then bring up something about the Marine’s. Don would immediately jump into the new topic and whatever my transgression may have been was forgotten, forgiven, or ignored. Don truly loved the Corps and I enjoyed hearing his stories. And…. he was a pretty good fireman too! John Ferreira
