Obituary of Aldo J Canepa

Aldo Joseph Canepa passed away peacefully at Dominican Hospital on March 27, 2018 at the age of 95. Born February 26, 1923 one of twelve children born to Dante and Anita Canepa. He grew up in Santa Cruz where he attended local schools including Chaminade. He began commercial fishing at a very young age and eventually joined the Tuna fleet out of San Diego. In 1941 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy joining four of his brothers who were already serving in the Navy. He served aboard the USS Cherokee, USS Brent and was stationed at Pearl Harbor. He participated in the African and Sicilian campaigns. During the invasion of Sicily his ship was hit and he was thrown overboard, requiring him to spend the last year in a Naval hospital. Following his military service Aldo worked at Wilson Plumbers, Favorite Brands Beer Distributor, Pasatiempo Golf Lodge, Malio’s Restaurant and Gilda’s Restaurant on the municipal wharf.

Aldo was an avid golfer and enjoyed countless rounds of golf at DeLaveaga Golf Course. He was also a regular in the golf lodge where he enjoyed meals and spending time with his friends. During his lifetime he shot two Holes-in-One at DeLaveaga. He was a talented athlete playing city league basketball and baseball. He was a member of the “B” League All Stars Softball Team.

He is survived by his sister, Marie Marietti and her husband Lido of Santa Cruz; He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters.

Services will be held at Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel 1050 Cayuga St., Santa Cruz, CA on Friday April 6 beginning at 10:00 am. Visitation will be held at the chapel on Thursday April 5 from 1:00 pm to 4:00pm. He will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery 2271 7th Ave., Santa Cruz, CA.
