Obituary of David Allen Doan

David Allen Doan, resident of Santa Cruz, Ca. October 5, 1949-October 13, 2013 David Allen Doan passed away peacefully on Sunday evening , October 13th, 2013, just one week after a celebration of his 64th birthday, that was attended by family and friends. Dave was born in 1949 in San Bernardino, California, to Jack Lawrence Doan and Phyllis Marie (Engle) Doan. He earned the highest honor in Scouting, becoming an Eagle Scout. Dave attended San Gorgonio High School in San Bernardino and then Cabrillo College in Aptos. He became a manager for Oshman's Sporting Goods Stores in Southern California and San Jose for many years. In 1989, he became a licensed contractor, and established his family business, David Doan Construction. Dave's solid reputation for quality work and design was known by Realtors and clients throughout Santa Cruz County. He shared his passion for his business and service with his sons, Ryan and Nick, who continue to run the business today. The Doan boys, Ryan and Nick, were the center of his life. They enjoyed all sports from Little League, Santa Cruz Youth Soccer League on, but primarily baseball at Santa Cruz High. Dave would religiously attend practices, travel long distances to games, and was highly involved in supporting his sons' baseball careers. They both played at Cabrillo College, and then moved to Division I college baseball: Ryan played for Belmont University, Nashville, TN, and Nick played for Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA. Again, Dave was an ardent supporter and frequent attendee of both sons' out of area games. Dave was an avid sports fan attending Giants games whenever they were in town. He loved Spring Training and attended every opening day and enjoyed every great Giants moment of the last 25 years. Dave was also an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing and camping in California, and traveling, especially to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Hawaii, and Spain. Dave supported his community in many ways. He was a past member of the Elks Club of Santa Cruz, the Native Sons of California, supported the Santa Cruz High School Athletic Programs, and during the years, donated his time to renovating the SC Pony League snack bar and helping build the dugouts for the Cabrillo College baseball complex among other endeavors. Dave lived a full life, and was always happiest entertaining his family and friends, with good food, wine, and laughs at his famous BBQs and holiday dinners for 30 or more! He was the eternal host and always the life of the party! Dave will be greatly missed by his family: his two sons Ryan Cameron Doan, Nicholas David Doan and his wife Kate (Dickson), and grandchildren Cali Doan and Hudson Doan. He shared much love and many adventures over the last twenty-three years with his companion Kim Miller, and her 3 daughters Marie Guzman (Nestor), Anna Miller (Jake), Irene Baron (Chris), and their children Seryna, Donovan, Jace, Lia, Carly, and Briana. He's also survived by his good friend and former wife, Loree. Dave also leaves his sister Sally Kiechlin of Fairfax, VA, and brother, Gregory Doan of San Clemente, CA plus 9 nieces and nephews. A private memorial service will be held with arrangements being made by Pacific Gardens Chapel. Friends, both personal and business, are invited to a celebration of Dave's life on Sunday, October 27, at Aptos Village Park, 100 Aptos Creek Rd , Aptos, CA 95003 at 1 pm.
