Dear Lois and family, This is such a huge loss for your family and our community. Bert helped to make this world a better place. I'll never forget the times I spent at your house listening to all the political conversations and being around the family. I hope you are all well.

Bert was a Professor and a wonderful Mentor while I attended the SJSU Graduate Planning Program from 1979-1983. I also had the good fortune to be able to carpool with Bert one semester during that time. During my Planning education and afterwards when I caught up with him I always found Bert to be a veritable fountain of knowledge, energy, activity and inspiration. Bert inspired many of us with his passion, his conviction and his ability to get in there and make a difference. My deepest sympathy and support for Lois and the entire Muhly Clan at this time. I know that Bert will always live in our hearts.

Although I only met Bert a few times back when he was on the City Council, I have always held him in high esteem as a man of courage and convictions. His stand on the US Invasion of Nicaragua (through "contra" proxies) and the Mining of their Harbors encouraged me to become more pubic in my own opposition. I share many of his political views, and appreciate his passion for peace. In short, Bert is one of my Heroes, and I thank God for letting him dance with us for a while. Beautiful souls are rare, and his was especially bright.

Dear Lois and family,
We are so very fortunate to have known and worked and sung with Bert, and we will miss him deeply.
Bert taught us so much about hands-on activism through his passion for environmental protection and social justice. He will never be forgotten in Santa Cruz.
We send our love and condolences to you all.

Dear Lois and family. Bert and I met many times as part of my work at the Santa Clara County Planning Department. And I always appreciated his counsel. He was very excited about my trips to the then Soviet Union and had me talk to his classes about planning in the USSR. I had great respect for his work in Nicaragua and for his work locally. He was a great man. His vision of how Planning should support peoples lives was always inspirational. He will be missed.

Dear Bill and Liza
I was sorry to see your dad in the paper. Even though I didn't know him, he sounded like a petty amazing guy, who never stopped striving to do good things.
I know he will greatly missed. Thinking of you and your family.

To The Muhly Family
Bert was a very influential role model in my very young years growing up in Santa Cruz. He was the head of the house that I loved being at more than anywhere else in the world! I cherish so many early and fond memories hanging out at the Muhly house waiting for the fun and frolic to unfold.
We send our deepest sympathies for his passing. He was an icon of the highest order.
With love,
The Yates/Tietz Families
