Obituary of Nicholas Mayer

On December 10th, 2017, Jesus took Nick by the hand and brought him home to Heaven. He lived a full and wonderful life. He was blessed beyond words to spend his life with his beautiful wife Phyllis who was truly the love of his life. Nick was born in San Rafael, CA on April 13, 1928 to Nick and Lou Mayer. He attended Santa Clara High where he was the Student Body President, and went to San Jose State University. Following SJSU he served in the Army and was stationed in Korea. Upon his return home he joined the San Jose City Fire Dept. where he served the City and its citizens for 32 years. Nick is survived by his 4 children, 2 stepchildren,10 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, nieces, his brother and sister-in-law. He was preceded in death by his mom and dad and his brother Billy. Nick was fortunate to have traveled the world with Phyllis, his brother Jim and sister in law Dee. Nick and Phyllis were living the dream between their homes in Tahoe, Hawaii and at the beach in the home Nick built himself. When he wasn't traveling you could find Nick on the tennis court, skiing or walking the beach holding Phyllis's hand. He was an accomplished wood worker and loved carving amazing pieces in his garage. He was devoted to his Catholic faith and a volunteer for many charities. He was the best friend you could ever ask for, a loving husband, father and grandfather and all around hero. We are all feeling a combination of joy for the life he lived and sadness for the loss of our sweet husband, dad, grandpa and friend. Until we meet again…we love you more than words could ever express. A Celebration of Life Mass will be held on January 24, 2018 at 11:00am at Resurrection Catholic Church in Aptos a reception will follow.
