Jackie's friendly smile was the first to greet me at U.C. Santa Cruz, fall 1967. "Blind date" roommates on an over-crowded campus, she welcomed me with her characteristic outgoing warmth. I was blessed to have shared our first years of college. Thanks, Jackie. -From one smalltown gal to another.

I only recently met Jackie at her lovely new shop in Aptos. I am so glad I was able to take several knitting classes from her. I will so miss her kind words and her presence at the shop. It won't be the same without her. My thoughts and prayers are with her family at this very difficult time.

I worked side-by-side with Jackie as the LMA at the Santa Cruz High School library for 5 years. Unfortunately, I recently moved away & lost touch with her. Nevertheless, I still remember what a wild ride we had! She was so empathetic & considerate toward the students while we worked together in a library that was always a "full house". We were a "2nd home" to so many students! It didn't matter if they were popular academics or homeless, struggling loners who were barely "hanging on". Jackie always tried mightily to make sure the library was always the place it needed to be: from a place of solace & reflection, to an excellent resource for those who needed the most technical computer advice. My heart goes out to Steve & Aimee, who lost her much too soon. With much sympathy, Theresa Payne

Steve, Aimee and Greg,
My thoughts, like so many others, are with you at this time. Jackie's voice for the librarians was that of both reason and creativity. She carefully thought through the many stages of growth for our department. As a friend, she and I shared many thoughts about life, children, bridge, chocolate. A woman of deep character, she had strong personal beliefs and values, and those guided her daily life. May your memories of her bring you solace. Sending caring thoughts to the three of you.

Dear Steve,
What a shock to see Jackie's obituary in the newspaper. We had only just met you and had hoped to travel some of the way with you on this horrible ALS journey. But that's the thing with this disease-everyone is so different in their progression. Jackie seemed so strong and determined to handle her ALS and in the end, the ALS did what it wanted. You were both a pleasure to meet and Keith and I wish you and your daughter the strength to deal with her absence. Our deepest sympathies,
Keith and Debbie Kumada

Stee and Aimee, Don and I read about Jackie's recent passing, she will be missed by many. She was always an ardent spokesperson for our student libraries. Jackie was a wonderful reference librarian who could on a dime find a resource or a quote when needed. Not to mention extremely well read! At Mission Hill, she and her library had a special place for students who needed a little extra attention and kindness. I haven't met anyone yet who has come close to Jackie's dry sense of humor. We will be thinking of you. Best ever,
Don Iglesias and Cathy Stefanki

I worked with Jackie at Mission Hill for most of the 90's. She was the librarian there and moved the library from card catalogs into the age of computers. Jackie loved to teach when given the opportunity and was a very good teacher. She had great rapport with students and staff.
After we both moved on to other jobs at other schools, we still occasionally kept in touch. There'd always be an Amy update. I'll never forget our lunches at Jack's or Jackies great sense of humor.

Steve, Aimee, and family,
I worked with Jackie at Natural Bridges. As others have mentioned, Jackie was always calm and poised. Even in the mild frenzy of an elementary school, I never saw her flustered. She had a wonderful, witty sense of humor that the kids and her colleagues loved. I hope it gives you some comfort to think of the lives Jackie touched and the untold number of children who love books and reading because of her. What a tremendous legacy! Jackie's was a life well-lived.

Dear Steve and Aimee:
Jackie meant so much to so many. For me, she was my mentor as a librarian. I started teaching at Natural Bridges 26 years ago when Jackie was the school librarian there. Watching her work with students in the library inspired me to pursue the same career.
She was one of the brightest colleagues I have ever encountered. She was always calm and poised, no matter what she faced, including her last struggle with her health.
God bless her and the two of you as you come to terms with this devastating loss.
All my love,
Tony

It was 1998, and I'd just gotten the job as school librarian at B-40 Middle School. I was on the phone to Jackie many times that year (and the years after!) asking what I should be doing to give the illusion I was on top of things, whether it was processing books, getting the new library automated catalog to work, collaborating with teachers, or working with students. Jackie was a "good idea" person. She always had sage advice delivered with a glib sense of humor. She was a tireless advocate for the library program (as we all were just to stay in our jobs), but in Jackie's case she always did her homework, so when we had to take on a budget or curriculum issue, she knew what she was talking about. This was to the benefit of the library program, and all of our students. I will miss her and I'm not sure who to call now. My thoughts are with Jackie's family.

Dear Steve and Aimee,
There are no words to describe the loss of a loved one. I will miss Jackie very much. We shared a special bond as I had you, Aimee, in my care from the time you were an infant until you were in school. I also had the pleasure of working with her at both Bay View and Natural Bridges. She was a beautiful and caring person who I feel privilaged to have had as a friend. My thoughts and prayers are with you both.

It has been years since I have seen Mrs. Ghio but she has left a lasting impression for life. I remember going to Natural Bridges elementary school and seeing her at the library from the time I was about 6 until I left for middle school. She was always so friendly and anyone could tell she loved what she did and had much enthusiasm. I'll never forget how she would educate the children and make it so fun to watch her read stories, etc., as her eyes lit up. I really looked up to her and never forgot her. My sister Katie well respected her as well and was friends with her daugher Aimee. It is comforting that this is only a temporary goodbye and that she will be waiting in heaven to reunite with all of us. May God bless her family and give them strength during this time. May many special memories be of comfort to you all.

I met Jackie when she & Chrissy & their husbands were in the setting up stage of opening the yarn shop. While an extraordinary knitter, it was Jackie & Chrissy's friendship extending a generous welcome that made them both feel like old friends. I have looked forward to spending Thursday evenings with Jackie, Chrissy and so many other new "old" friends brought into my life through their dream come true at the shop. Jackie, obviously had a very special heart in which she held her loved ones close. I have been praying for Jackie since the onset of her illness and will continue to pray along with her now for the hearts of her family and countless friends to be comforted by the gift of her life. To Mrs.Ghio's family I am very sorry for your loss. Mrs.Ghio was like an mother to me. My freshman year in high school I wasn't doing well in school and she found out and would question me about my grades and started really pushing me. So eventually my grade's started picking up. And after that we became really great friends, I'd go in almost everyday to say hi in the library, we'd celebrate our birthdays together for hers was a day before mine. We had a lot of great memories so many I just cannot type them all, I will never forget her, for she is one of the most important people I have ever met in my life. Thank you Mrs.Ghio for everything you've done for me and may you Rest In Peace.

My deepest sympathies are with Steve, Amy, all of Jackie’s family and all of her friends, especially Chrissy. I know our Santa Cruz City Schools Teacher Librarian community is deeply saddened by this loss, and my condolences go to all who have known and worked with Jackie over the years. I am feeling so fortunate that I was able to know Jackie this past year and a half. Hired as Santa Cruz High School’s Teacher Librarian after Jackie retired, she was willing to show me the ropes and orient me to the wonderful library environment that she had created. With Chrissy Perkins, they welcomed me to the Santa Cruz community and were among my first friends in my new home. Jackie and Steve introduced me to Jack’s Burgers and “cheeseburger Fridays!” Whenever we talked shop, Jackie would remind me that it is all about the kids. She was, as everyone has noted, warm, welcoming, and kind. I will keep her reminder with me always. I am so happy that Jackie and Chrissy were able to fulfill their dream to start a yarn shop! Jackie’s influence continues. I’ve been blessed to know her. She will be missed.
