Obituary of Marlene Arlt Sigmund

MARLENE SIGMUND Marlene Sigmund passed away peacefully at Watsonville Community Hospital on August 30, 2011. Born in Koblenz, Germany, she would have celebrated her 90th birthday on November 23rd. A resident of Santa Cruz County for the past 43 years, she lived many of those years in Watsonville. She enjoyed working at Mervyn's; retiring from there, leaving many good friends and co-workers. She then became a member of the first class for docents at the Elkhorn Slough. She spent many years caring for the environment there, watching the bird migrations and learning to kayak. She was an adventuresome traveler touring the country by herself on Amtrak, riding bicycles with her son in the Florida Everglades, and hiking with her daughter in Mendocino. She was a familiar face at Spa Fitness Center in Watsonville, where she would arrive at 6 a.m. three days a week, for her swimming pool workout. She was very generous with her time volunteering with Dominican Hospital, the Red Cross, and the California Graybears in Watsonville. Marlene is survived by her husband, Ray Corum and his family of Watsonville, her son, and daughter in-law, Steve and Evelyn Sigmund of Miami, Florida, and her daughter and her partner, Mary Canavan and Marie Minghini of Berkeley. She leaves her granddaughters, Jennifer (Mark) Pollock, Shawna (Neil) Macneale. and Dawn Coakley. She also leaves her beloved great grandchildren: Julia, Cedar, Ava, and Sierra. A private burial will take place at Soquel Cemetery. The family asks that any kind acts of charity be made to the www.elkhornslough.org.
