Obituary of Mary Roberta Bernard

Mary Roberta Bernard was born on August 11, 1924 in San Francisco, CA, the second daughter to Robert and Lydia Ramsay. Roberta had one sister Mathilda Jane whom she loved dearly. She was married to Casey Bernard and was a supportive mother of five children. Grandma Ro or "GRo" to her 7 grandchildren and a proud Great Grandmother, Roberta died peacefully with her family beside her in her home on February 24, 2014. Roberta was a proud alumnae of Sequoia High School in Redwood City. She would break into their old fight song upon request. In 1945 she obtained her degree and teaching credential at San Jose State University. Soon after she began her teaching career as a physical education teacher at San Rafael, then Los Gatos, Holy Cross High School and finished her career at Marello Preparatory in 1974. To remain connected to her community, Roberta later worked for Marini's on The Boardwalk, Bonnie's on the Wharf, and volunteered at The St. Francis Soup Kitchen. Our mother enjoyed traveling and meeting new people. Ro visited Mexico, Hawaii, Europe and sailed through the Panama Canal. Going on trips with her girls to the wine country and spas was always memorable. The annual August birthday for GGRo was always spent in Lake Tahoe, Mom loved swimming, kayaking, tennis tournaments, hiking and basking in the warm mountain sun of the Sierras. Recently she toured Ireland and also Alaska. A tenacious tennis player and competitive card player Ro stayed active. One of her greatest pleasures was belonging to The Silver Dolphins of The Boy's and Girl's Club and being a long - time participating member of the Holy Cross parish. Roberta is survived by her four children: Terrence Bernard (Cindy) JoAnne Mulderig (Michael) Mary Jane Lathan (Joe) and Barbara Jeanne Bernard. She is also survived by her seven adoring grandchildren: Emily Coonerty (Ryan), Brody, Casey, Maureen, Jesse, Hannah and Daniel.
