Obituary of Herbert Lawrence Fogel

Herbert Lawrence Fogel passed away on February 16, 2013 in Santa Cruz, CA at the age of 87. Herbert was born January 6, 1926, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Albert H. and Helene S. Fogel. Raised in Lexington, Kentucky, he was a graduate of Lafayette High School, class of 1943. Following his high school graduation Herbert enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for two years until the end of WWII. He later went on to attend the University of Kentucky earning a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Electrical Engineering. Herbert's professional career was in the field of electrical engineering and aeronautics. He was employed as a Field Engineer for Western Electric Co., later as a Design Engineer in the missle department of Douglas Aircraft and Western Design and Mfg. Co., and as Senior Staff Engineer, Satellite Division, at Lockheed Missile and Space Company. He also taught electrical engineering at the University of Kentucky from 1953-1954. Herbert was a member of Temple Beth El in Aptos. An avid reader, he also enjoyed music and was an amateur muscian. He played trumpet as a way to put himself through college, and later during his retirement, played saxaphone in a jazz band (well into his 80s). He was involved in square dancing and was later introduced to Round dancing. He and his wife Ruth became expert dancers and formed many Round dance clubs and cued Rounds at many square dance clubs. They also taught and participated in numerous Round Dance events, choreographing and publishing several round dances. Herbert is survived by his wife of 30 years, Ruth H. Fogel; his daughters, Ann H. Crawford and Beth C Whiting; his son, Edward J. Fogel; 8 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. A graveside service will be held at Home of Peace Cemetery, Meder St., Santa Cruz, CA. on Wednesday February 20, 2013 at 12 Noon.
