Stephen Story

Obituary of Stephen Lane Story

A former resident of Watsonville and Catalina Island, Steve had a love for volunteer work which began in college. He spent time in the US Peace Corp and was a Veteran of the Vietnam War. Serving his country at war made Steve want to help others even more. Over the course of his life, he volunteered thousands of hours of his time to rural development projects all over the US and Mexico. This led to his fluency in Spanish and love of Mexican food which he passed on to his six children, (love of Mexican food, not fluency in Spanish). Steve used his mastery of Spanish and love of helping people in his long career at the State of California's EDD where he worked hard to develop connections with employers and potential employees. Steve retired to Catalina Island where he had spent many summers as a boy. He worked as a kayak guide and Catalina Conservancy volunteer. When he wasn't in his kayak or in the hills of Catalina, he could be found with his wife, Mary as they traveled the nation in their RV often doing trips to support Habitat for Humanity. Steve was also well known and was loved for both his sense of humor and his great patience. Steve dedicated his life to family, sharing family values and serving others through volunteer work. He is survived by his wife Mary, his six children and eleven grandchildren, two stepchildren and one brother and his wife as well as many extended family members. Steve will be greatly missed. A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, January 27, 2014 at the Holy Cross Mission Chapel beginning at 11:00 a.m. There will be a celebration of Life held on Catalina Island during the upcoming summer. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to Hospice of Santa Cruz County, (940 Disc Drive Scotts Valley, CA 95066).
