Obituary of Valerie Victoria Shepherd

Valerie Victoria (Floyd) Shepherd, formerly of Jackson, Michigan, died Saturday November 3rd, 2012 at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz, California at the age of 80. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland on June 9th, 1932 the daughter of Edward and Nubra (Weeks) Floyd. She had three marriages (J.L. Washington Cain; Alphonso Blackman; Steven Shepherd) and was preceded in death by five brothers (Lamar, Dever, Elwood, Everett, Edward) and two sisters (Emma, Doris) and by three of her children (Ruth Victoria, Valerie Vanessa, Sherri Lynn). She is survived by one sister (Nubra Floyd); two sons (Jay Cain, Gerald Cain); two daughters (Tamar Cain, Denise Cain Simpson); seven grandsons (Darrin, George, Martuan, Omowale, Abayomi, Abassi, Chioke); four granddaughters (Kimberly, Sherri, Monette, Valerie); and twenty seven great grandchildren as well as a host of other loving family members and friends. She was still active and vibrant, when she retired from Michigan Dept. of Corrections as a Resident Unit Manager, after close to 20 years of dedicated service and moved to Indio, California. Cremation will be handled by Pacific Gardens Chapel in Santa Cruz with Memorial Service to be held at St. George Residences. A celebration of her life will be held in Michigan at a later date.
