Obituary of Hazel Lorraine Black

Hazel Lorraine "Lorie" Black passed away in her Boulder Creek home on September 22, 2012 at the age of 94. Lorie was born in Oakland on February 21, 1918 to George and Hazel (Horstman) Lundgren. She attended the Oakland Public schools, and after graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1935 She went on to attend UC Berkeley. Lorie obtained her Associates of Arts Degree in 1937, and on October 20, 1945 she earned her Bachelors of Arts degree. Lorie went on to have a very successful career as an executive secretary in the fields of law, insurance, and manufacturing. She retired to Boulder Creek in 1982, where she lived in the Horstman family home that was built in 1882. Lorie was a life-long member of many organizations including; the Oakland/ East Bay Chapter of Executive Women; The University of California Alumni Association; and The American Association of University Women. She also enjoyed being a member of the Boulder Creek Historical Society, Friends of the Library (Santa Cruz Public Libraries), P.E.O. Sisterhood (Chapter SP, Santa Cruz). She was a active member in the Boulder Creek United Methodist Church and The Boulder Creek Volunteer Fire Department. Lorie is preceded in death by her loving husband of 31 years Robert Elliott Black. She is survived by her brother Donald (Jean) Lundgren; her nephew Steven Lundgren; her niece Karen Dobel; her step-daughter Tisha Anne (Dale) Ferguson; and her step-grandchildren Kenneth & Robert Floyd. A memorial service will be held for Lorie on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at Pacific Gardens Chapel in Santa Cruz beginning at 2:00 p.m. She truly treasured her beloved family and many, many friends. She now Rests in Peace in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Boulder Creek with her Pioneer great-grandparents (Christian & Mary Horstman), grandparents (William & Elsie Horstman), Mother (Hazel Lundgren), and her Husband (Robert E. Black).
