Obituary of Alex Acevedo

A recitation of the Holy Rosary and Memorial Mass will be celebrated on January 10th and 11th for Alex Acevedo who passed away unexpectedly at his parent's home on December 25, 2012. He was 46 years old. Alex was born at the original Branciforte Plaza location of Dominican Hospital, and attended Bay View and Westlake Elementary Schools, Mission Hill Jr. High School, and graduated from Santa Cruz High School. Alex made many friends and respected colleagues during his 30-year career in the restaurant business. He worked as a chef for Carniglia's, The Santa Cruz Hotel, Ideal Fish Restaurant, La Posada Retirement Community, and most recently at College Nine on the UCSC Campus. His family will always cherish memories of Alex's generosity. He loved to build bicycles (including paintwork) from the ground up, and work on all types of cars. He would obtain bicycle parts by trading his labor for them, and give the newly finished bicycle to a person in need of it. Alex could always be found skateboarding or surfing, and worked for a time as a cabinetmaker. He is survived by his mother and father, Matilde and Marcelino Acevedo, and his sister, Diane Guzman all of Santa Cruz. He also leaves his sister, Marcy Lauderbaugh of Watsonville; brother, Michael Acevedo of Oceanside, nieces, Isabella Rich, Micaela Guzman; his nephew, Eddie Sanchez, and many loving extended family members. Alex was preceded in death by his sister, Mercedes Acevedo in 2010, and was very close to his maternal grandparents and uncles in Mexico, who have preceded him. The Rosary will be on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel beginning at 7 p.m. The mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 11, at Holy Cross Church (126 High Street, Santa Cruz) beginning at 12 noon. Private entombment will take place at Holy Cross Mausoleum in Santa Cruz, where he will be laid to rest beside his sister, Mercedes. Any kind acts of charity can be made in Alex's memory to Holy Cross Church. Please visit www.pacificgardenschapel.com to light a candle for Alex and share your prayers with his family.
