Obituary of Donald Hastings

He graduated from Holy Cross High School in Santa Cruz, and attended nearby Cabrillo College where he earned an AA degree before transferring to Chico State University where he graduated with a BA degree in 1971. Don first worked for County Bank in Santa Cruz, followed by positions with other banks and lending institutions. Prior to retirement, he was a partner at Shoreline Lending in Capitola. He was an affiliate member of the Santa Cruz Association of Realtors. Don also served in the Army Reserve in Santa Cruz and San Jose from 1965 to 1971. Don was an avid sports fan, closely following the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Lakers, and UCLA football and basketball. He coached and was involved in player placement and tryouts for many years for Santa Cruz Little League. Don also enjoyed playing recreational slow pitch and coed softball. Don was a loving father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by his wife of 39 years, Darlene, his daughter Kristen Barkman (Dave) of Bozeman, Montana, his son Kevin of Santa Cruz, his grandchildren Justin, Emma and Kelsey of Bozeman, his brother Bill (Molly) of Seattle, his brother Bob (Shari) of Soquel, his mother-in-law Lillian Guzman of Santa Cruz, and his sister-in-law Francine Kerr (Dave) of Santa Cruz. In addition, he has many loving nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents Donald and Noreen and his sister Virginia Thorne. Visitation will be at Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga Street, Santa Cruz, on Sunday, April 29, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. A rosary will be said on Sunday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. at Pacific Gardens Chapel. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, April 30, at 10:00 a.m. at Resurrection Church in Aptos. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or a favorite charity.
