Obituary of Mary Josephine Dettling

Mary J. Dettling Mary Dettling passed away December 5, 2011 at a Sacramento skilled nursing facility. She was 95. Mary was born in Washington on January 9, 1916 the daughter of Joseph Spane and Eliza Schuler Spane. She grew up in the town of Stanwood, Washington. As a young woman she moved to California and in 1936 married Carl Dettling. After marrying she and Carl moved to Santa Cruz where they owned and operated Eastside Dairy. In 1953 the couple moved with their two daughters to Scotts Valley where they operated their own dairy. Mary resided in Scotts Valley most of her life, declining health required, she relocate to the Sacramento area three years ago to be closer to her two daughters. Mary was a former member of San Agustin Catholic Church and a member of Aepler Gruppe. She was characterized by her daughters as a woman of strength, perserverance and one who had an ethic of hardwork. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her daughters, Shirley Ludwico and her husband Ron of Lincoln, CA and Carole King and her husband John of Elk Grove, CA. she leaves two sisters, Louise Ridge and Pauline Haugen both of Washington; She is also survived by three grandchildren, three great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Carl in 1984. Services will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery, 2271 7th Ave., Santa Cruz, CA on Tuesday December 13, 2011 at 12 Noon. Arrangements are under the care of Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel.
