Obituary of Marcella Mae Constantine

Marcella Sweeley Constantine died on September 14, at La Posada in Santa Cruz, less than a month after her 96th birthday. Marcella was born on a farm in Westerville, South Dakota, August 18, 1915, the youngest of seven children born to William and Mary Sweeley. She grew up in South Dakota, graduating from Mitchell High School in 1934. In 1935 she married John Sheridan, in Chicago, and they had one daughter, Mary Josephine. After John's death in 1938, she worked briefly in Livingstone Manor, New York, as a beautician, and later was employed by Bell Telephone in New York and Los Angeles as a long distance supervisor for over 32 years. After retirement, she resided in Placentia, California, until her move to Santa Cruz to be near her daughter and granddaughter. Marcella loved to read, knit, and play bingo. She enjoyed her many friends at La Posada, where she lived for the past seven years. She will be remembered for her ready smile, good humor, and friendliness. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jo and Frank Warren, of La Selva Beach; her granddaughter Karen Warren and her partner, Sheila Carrillo, and their daughter, Sophia, of Santa Cruz; her grandson John Warren and his wife, Yolanda Arenales, and children Sandra, Luna, Katrina, and Dylan, of Santa Monica; and her granddaughter Kristen Ball and her husband, Eric, and their sons, Caelan James and Stefan, of Roseburg, Oregon; and many loved nieces and nephews. Friends are welcome to attend a memorial service on October 8, 2011, at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Santa Cruz, at 11 a.m. On October 18, she will be buried at the Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church Cemetery, in Westerville, South Dakota, next to her grandfather Jacob Johnson, a Norwegian immigrant, who built the Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church in 1875.
