Obituary of Sunny Varner

Sunny Varner, 86, passed away peacefully on December 27th in Santa Cruz, California. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan as Yetta Weinman. She married her high school sweetheart, Melvin Suhd, right after the end of World War II. They raised three children: Glenn, Michael and Lauren. When the children were young, Sunny enrolled in college, eventually earning three Masters Degrees in Education. Sunny taught elementary school in Los Angeles, for over 20 years. Sunny was raised in an orthodox Jewish family and she later embraced the Unitarian Universalist Church, where she met her second husband, Marshall Varner in the mid-1970's. After retirement, Sunny and Marshall travelled extensively around the country, settling in Sonoma County. In addition to her love of travel, Sunny volunteered in a local elementary school, teaching reading. She loved water exercise, and a good laugh. A life-long Liberal, Sunny was particularly interested in Peace, social justice and women's issues and kept up with world events. Her love of family was key to her sunny disposition. Sunny leaves behind her children: Glenn Suhd, Michael Suhd and Kate Kausch, Lauren Suhd and Wally Brondstatter, Bryan and Chris Varner, as well as five grandchildren. Funeral services were private.
