Obituary of Reva Ruth Slaughter

Reva R. Slaughter passed away peacefully at home in Scotts Valley, CA in the company of her immediate family. She was 92. Reva was born in Pueblo, Colorado to Margret and Oliver Patterson and moved to Los Angeles at the age of four. Reva was a graduate of Compton Union High School. In July of 1938 Reva married Max Slaughter. They resided in Long Beach, CA until they built a home in Woodland Hills, CA in 1948. Max worked in the plumbing trade and Reva was a home maker. Reva gave her time and energy raising their two daughters and working in the community. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and quilting. Grandma Reva generously baked English Toffee, Pecan Rolls, Peanut Butter Cups, Fudge, and the family favorites: Ranger Cookies, Rice Crispy Treats and Chex Mix for her family on their birthdays and Christmas. On her 90th birthday the family paid tribute to her baking by presenting her with a cookbook of the family's favorite receipes. In 1999, following the death of her husband Reva moved to Springs Lakes Park in Scotts Valley to be near family. For 11 years Reva was an active member of the Scotts Valley Senior Center where she enjoyed weekly Bingo, poker games and baking homemade cakes for dessert. Reva is survived by her daughters Sandy Payton of Scotts Valley and Kay Amos (Bob) of Felton. She is survived by 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Her grandchildren are David Fortin (Barbara), Carrie Troy (Steve),Kathy Schaffer(Kevin),Valerie Hudson, Mindi Broughton(Paul), Erik Amos(Katie) and Christopher Amos(Jennifer). Her great grandchildren are Lyle Fortin(Alisa), Hannah Fortin, Mark Fortin, Michelle Schaffer, Melanie Schaffer, Alex Hudson, Beau Broughton, Chad Broughton, Chloe Broughton, Marlee Amos, Maxx Amos, Jackson Amos and Sawyer Amos. Reva was preceded in death by her husband, eight siblings and great grandson Kirk Hudson. A family memorial and scattering of her ashes will be held at a later date. In the last year of her life, Reva was cared for by many dedicated caregivers. The family suggests that contributions in memory of Reva could be made to Hospice of Santa Cruz, 940 Disc Drive, Scotts Valley, CA, 95066. To quote Reva "Old age isn't for sissies". She was so loved and will be missed.
