Obituary of Joseph Anthony Martin

Joseph Anthony Martin Joseph Anthony Martin, age 87, unexpectedly passed away on May 31, 2011. A resident of Capitola, he was born in Tracy, CA on Feb. 2, 1924 to Theodore and Madeline Martin. His parents were Portuguese immigrants from the Azores (Terceira) and were Dairy Farmers. Joseph grew up moving all over the Central Valley, but especially liked Patterson. At age 13 his father died. He quit school and became the breadwinner for his mother and two sisters, Mary (Tolomei-deceased) and Alice (Wickersham). He married Betty Lou Matson in 1968 which included 6 stepchildren, Mark, Greg, Louis, Jan, Cheri and Rod Davis. Joe was a Teamster and retired from Pacific Ready Mix Inc. in Redwood City after 30 years in 1986. He had a passion for American cars and stock car racing. You couldn't ever talk to him for any period of time without him inquiring of your car and mentioning his '61 Chevy Impala. Traveling by car was his bliss, especially to see a stock car race in person. His green Chevy truck and cab over camper was a familiar sight anywhere in the county especially around 41st Ave. He was able to drive his truck until his last day. He had the ability to make others slow down and smile. That is his gift to all of us. Joe is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Emily Martin of Capitola, and his 3 grandchildren, Kaleb, Ian and Malia Martin. A Vigil will be held for Joe on Thurs. June 9, from 4 -7pm with a Rosary beginning at 7pm at Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St. in Santa Cruz. A Memorial Mass will be held on Fri. June 10 beginning at 11 o'clock am at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 515 Frederick St. in Santa Cruz.
