Obituary of Douglas Tozier

DOUGLAS BRADFORD TOZIER March 16, 1943- September 20, 2011 Our family wishes to share the following excerpt from Douglas personal writing: " "ex nihilo nihil fit" "Out of nothing comes nothing." Thus the Latin phrase speaks to us; we who are left. And then, conversely, something comes from something else. We were not spawned from nothing. Indeed, we grew to maturity in a family structure, and saw evidence before our very eyes of others coming from something. How may generations of men have come and gone? And the vast multitude have been swallowed up in the black oceans of the past. Some are remembered and spoken about for a generation or two; others have claim to a kind of immortality. These we study, for their example in living, and for the thoughts they bequeathed to us. Such names live in our collective memory: Alexander, Caesar, Plato, Aristotle. It's a long list. But primarily the list is closed to a family circle: Mother, Father, Brother, Sister. And when the family scatters and dies, so the memory of those in the family circle die. " Douglas passed away on September 20, 2011 at Dominican Hospital surrounded by family, friends, and the music of Mozart. His family will forever remember the love and pride he had for them; including the family gatherings, the road trips, and daily life he treasured with his son and daughter.
