Obituary of Elizabeth Gill

Recitation of the Holy Rosary and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Santa Cruz on Wednesday and Thursday for Elizabeth Gill who passed away peacefully in Santa Cruz on August 1, 2013. Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, she was 92 years old. Mrs. Gill moved to the Santa Cruz area 66 years ago and together with her husband, owned and operated Gill's Janitorial Service. In her late 80's, Elizabeth worked at Costco, and thoroughly enjoyed meeting and talking with all who approached her. She was very active in both service and civic clubs in Santa Cruz, serving as past president for St. Anthony's Society and C.P.D.E.S. She also was a long time member of U.P.P.E.C, and U.P.R.S.I. Her family will always cherish the many memories of Elizabeth's love for painting, reading, and her talents in arts and crafts. The beautiful Christmas ornaments that she made for her children and grandchildren are wonderful reminders of her love for them. Her family was of paramount importance to her, and time spent with her children and her beloved grandchildren, and great grandchildren, was what she enjoyed most. She is survived by her son John Gill of San Jacinto, California, her daughter, Lillian Pereira of Hollister, California, and her daughter and son-in law Diane and Sam Shoup of Santa Cruz. She also leaves her six grandchildren; Elizabeth Markfield, Christine DeMaggio, Melissa Jones, Jennifer Shoup, Matthew Shoup and Laney Gill; and her seven great grandchildren: Kyle, Felicia, Joey, R.J., Sara, Jacob, and Lauren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, John C. Gill Jr., and her son in-law, Joe S. Pereira. Friends may pay their respects on Wednesday, August 7th at Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel, from 12 noon until 7 p.m. Recitation of the rosary will begin at the chapel Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. The mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Catholic Church (435 Monterey Ave. Capitola CA.) beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Mausoleum in Santa Cruz, where she will be laid to rest beside her loving husband John Gill. A reception will then take place to honor her life, at the St. Joseph's Church Hall. Any kind acts of charity may be made in her name to St. Jude children's Research Hospital, (StJude.org).
