Obituary of Brother Duain Edward O'Mara OSJ

49 Years as a Religious Brother in the Oblates of St. Joseph Died in Santa Cruz on June 28, 2012. A Rosary Vigil Service will be held on Monday, July 2nd, at the Shrine of St. Joseph, 544 West Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz at 6:30 PM. Visitation begins in the Shrine Chapel at 4:30 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Shrine on Tuesday, July 3rd, at 11:00 AM with a luncheon to follow. A Graveside Service will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Madera, California at 1:30 PM on Thursday, July 5th. Bro. Duain entered St. Joseph's Preparatory Seminary at Santa Cruz, CA in 1956. He did his novitiate in Tomales in 1962 and made his first profession in 1963. After his novitiate, he continued his studies in preparation for the priesthood at Mt. Angel Seminary in St. Benedict, Oregon. During that time, he felt God was calling him to remain as a religious brother. After graduating from Mt. Angel in 1966, he was assigned to St. Mary's Parish in Sacramento, where he remained until 1980, serving as sacristan and catechist. He was then briefly assigned to Mt. St. Joseph Seminary in Loomis, CA. Bro. Duain was transferred in 1981 to St. Joachim Parish in Madera, where he taught religion and served as treasurer of the community. From 1987 to 1995 he returned to Mt. St. Joseph Seminary, where he served as treasurer and secretary of the community. He managed the altar bread distribution business to help support the seminary. In 1995, he was transferred to the Shrine of St. Joseph in Santa Cruz, where he served as treasurer, sacristan and server. In 2012, after a brief struggle with cancer, which he bore with patience and courage, he crossed over to eternal life. Bro. Duain will always be remembered as a humble, quiet religious in the spirit of St. Joseph. He was content to do the simple and ordinary tasks. He was devoted to liturgy and catechesis, serving as sacristan, training altar servers and teaching catechism.
