Obituary of E. Stuart Hurt

Long time Santa Cruz and Capitola resident, E. Stuart Hurt passed away on June 8th, surrounded by her family. She was born in Fresno, May 1st, 1920. While attending Fresno State, she met and married her husband of 50 years, Commander Dan J. Hurt (ret). After living in San Francisco during WWII, the couple settled in Santa Cruz where they enjoyed restoring their Oceanview Avenue victorian home with their family. Stuart and her husband moved to Capitola in 1974, where she was active in the Soroptimist Club of Mid county, serving as president and enjoyed her home for many years. After raising her three children, Stuart went back to college to earn a degree in Gerontology. She used her degree to begin her career managing R.S.V.P. (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) for the Tri-County area of Santa Cruz, San Benito and Monterey counties. Later she was elected to the California State Senior Legislature Assembly and enjoyed the honor of an internship in the US Senate. For the last twelve years, Stuart loved her life and friends at Dominican Oaks. This experience was even more special by her companion of many years, Robert (Bob) Jackson. She was greatly loved by her family and many friends and will be missed. She is survived by her two daughters, Andrea Stuart Hurt and Lynda Hurt, four granddaughters; Wendy (Rick) Melrose, Krista (JB) Yearwood, Kathleen (Jarren) Gonzales and Caroline (LaMonte) Zavin and five great-grandchildren.
