Obituary of Jose O. Barros
Jose – “Joe” – Barros was born on March 25, 1937 in São Jorge, Azores and died on June 12, 2022 at his home in Aptos, CA. A devout Catholic, he served as a sacristan for much of his adolescence and teenage years. He liked sports – especially soccer and volleyball, serving as the team captain. At 18, Joe immigrated with his family to Argentina. There, he worked as an electrician and radio and television salesman and repairman. When he was 32, he immigrated once again, this time to California where he worked at UCSC as a custodian, and also had a small business doing radio and television repairs. Joe married Maria Elvira in 1972; they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year. Together, they traveled to Europe and Argentina and were active in local Portuguese communities. Joe will be remembered most for his deep faith, strong convictions, and love of his wife and family. He is survived by his wife, Maria Elvira Barros; his brothers Hermengildo Barros (Celina Barros) and Gaspar Barros (Antonia Barros); his sister, Maria Ligia Barros Garrello (Decio Garrello); brothers-in-law Joe Oliveira and Teodoro Oliveira; and numerous nieces and nephews in California and Argentina. A Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Capitola, CA on Wednesday, June 22nd.
