Obituary of Lucille Rosalie Zulim

Our mom, Lucille Zulim, passed away on April 12,2023,at age 94. Lucille was born September 4,1928 in Reedley, California. She was the youngest of 9 children of Joseph and Marie Ribail. She lived in Reedley until she graduated from Reedley High School. She moved to Fresno and was working at a movie theater when she met her future husband, James Zulim. After their frst date, Lucille told her sister Martha, "that’s the man I’m going to marry.” She was right. They married in 1948 and started raising a family of 4 sons (Steve, David, Mark and Mike) and lived in Fresno until 1964 when the family moved to Santa Cruz. Lucille worked as a secretary/bookkeeper for her husband Jim’s construction business for over 20years. She also volunteered at the Red Cross in the1970’s. Lucille and Jim enjoyed going dancing at the Portuguese Hall and at the Mid-County Senior Center almost every weekend. They also liked to travel and would drive over to Lake Tahoe a few times each year where they would stay at their favorite casino, the Nevada Lodge, to dine and gamble. Lucille loved playing the slot machines! After our dad, Jim, passed away in 1990 (mom and dad were married for 42 wonderful years until dad’s untimely passing at the age of 62), son Mike took Lucille, mom, on many trips throughout the years, including Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Reno and many Indian gaming casinos. Mom had fun rooting with her sons for their favorite sports teams and Mike took mom annually to watch the Oakland A’s baseball team. Mom looked forward each year going to the Santa Cruz County Fair. Mom’s hobbies included gardening, puzzle making and computer card games. Mom was also an avid reader/listener of mystery and fiction books. Mom was a great cook and baked the best oatmeal cookies known to mankind! Just ask her family and all the friends who tasted these delicious treats! Mom also delighted in organizing monthly luncheons with her many friends at local restaurants. But the thing mom enjoyed the most was the numerous family get togethers throughout the year to celebrate holidays and birthdays or just to get together! And what a family! Lucille is survived by her 4 sons, as mentioned earlier: Steve, David with wife Sookie, Mark with wife Gayle, and Mike. 7 grandchildren: Robert, with wife Becky, Kathy,Amber with husband Ray, Matt with wife Whitney, Jamie with husband Rick, Chris and Jennie. And 10 great grandchildren: Makani, Gavin, Olivia, Aria, Blair, Braxton, Jackson, Carter, Zoe and Azai. Everyone said mom was the kindest, selfless, most thoughtful person they knew. She never complained about anything and was always concerned about how you were doing. She was the best! “We all love and miss you, mom!” A Visitation will be held at Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel at 1050 Cayuga St. in Santa Cruz on Monday, April, 17th from 3pm-7pm with a Vigil at 7pm. A Funeral Ceremony will take place at Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel on Tuesday, April 18th at 12pm followed by a Committal Service at Oakwood Memorial Park in Santa Cruz.
