Obituary of Paul Cantrell Henry

Paul is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Audrenne (Audie) and their children Marla Van Cleve (Grady Van Cleve); Lyn Harvey (John Green), and Lyn's children, Ryan and Samantha Harvey along with numerous cousins. Paul was born in Sacramento to Pioneer families of Northern California and Nevada. His father, Jay Louis Henry, was a Superior Court Judge and ran for California Senate in 1932. His mother, Pauline Emily Whitmore Henry, was an accomplished milliner before her marriage. He attended McClatchy High School, Sacramento City and California State University, Sacramento. Paul proudly served in the U.S. Navy during 1945-46. Paul met his wife Audie when they were both teaching at Hollywood Park Elementary School. His teaching career spanned 31 years, retiring in 1987 to babysit his newborn grandson. Paul's sense of humor and genuine personality gained him many long and close friendships, especially his golfing buddies of 67 years, most who grew up with him in the Curtis Park area. He was a champion trap shooter, avid skier, hunter and fisherman, instilling in his girls at an early age his passion for these sports. Paul is an inspiration to many people, skiing as a Boy Scout before the advent of lifts and continuing into his 80th year. He was a car enthusiast with a special interest in antique cars. He could name the make, model and year of just about any vehicle on the road after just a glance. Paul was a talented pianist, playing beautiful pieces by ear. He was a proud member of the Lions International Club (Arden and Cabrillo Host) for over 50 years, Masons Bi Centennial Daylight Lodge #830, Ambassadors Club, Life Long Learners UCSC, CalRTA and SIRS. He was a regular blood donor, donating well over 40 pints of blood. He included his family in his love of outdoors, spending many summers visiting the Klippel family in Yosemite and camping in the Lake Tahoe area. He and Audie loved to travel in their 5th wheeler and also visited many countries around the world. After Lyn and her family moved to New Zealand in 1996, Paul and Audie moved to Aptos to be close to their daughter Marla, taking with them 70 years of friendships and memories from Sacramento. They have since enjoyed many years of new friendships in the Santa Cruz area. Paul and Audie made 17 trips to New Zealand, spending the equivalent of 2 years there. He was a devoted grandfather and enjoyed a close relationship with Ryan and Samantha, helping to guide them into successful young adults. Paul's family would like to thank everyone who has supported them over the years. A service will be held to celebrate Paul's life on Saturday, April 12 at 3:00 pm at the Pacific Gardens Chapel at 1050 Cayuga Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Northern California Lions Sight Association or a charity of your choice.
