Gwynn Hanchett

Obituary of Gwynn Corbet Hanchett

Gwynn Hanchett passed away peacefully on Friday with the sounds of the ocean in her Aptos home. She was 95. A California native, she attended Hamlin School in San Francisco, Punahou School in Hawaii, and graduated from Cal Berkeley. Here, as a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, she made many life time friends including Marty Johnson whom she talked to several times a week. Her work career as the social reporter for the Hearst Examiner allowed her to meet many great people of San Francisco society including a memorable meeting with Randolph Hearst himself. Gwynn loved to have lunch at the Town and Country Club on Union Square which she was a very long time member as well as the San Francisco Symphony. Even after she retired to Aptos, Gwynn would drive up for the Wednesday matinees and meet friends. Gwynn is preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Hanchett and survived by a niece Diane Butler, nephew Vincent Butler both of San Francisco, also her good friend Jim Wilder of Aptos. In lieu of flowers, contributions are preferred to the Santa Cruz SPCA (spcasc.org) or Hospice of Santa Cruz www.hospicessantacruz.org
